Glimmer Shop~~~European Black Alder
European Black Alder (Alnus glutinosa) tree seedlings. Makes a fine garden specimen, growing to 80', with glossy, oval leaves that remain green very late into the fall season. The flowers are inconspicuous, reddish-brown catkins bringing on very interesting woody, cone-like catkins. The catkins start out green and ripen to brown, persisting throughout the winter to dress up the landscape. The bark is quite green and sticky (glutinous) when young, becoming gray and somewhat scaly as the tree ages. Alder grows very quickly. It adapts to all soils, and is very tolerant of poor soils, salt, and low pH, making this an excellent choice for municipal street plantings. Also tolerates wet conditions well, and is great for wetland plantings. Likes full sun, but will tolerate some shade. Hardy for Zones 3-7. Nursery grown: Pennsylvania license No. 319. Planting instructions are included with all orders.
These trees also are excellent for bonsai, check out this wonderful bonsai link for a picture.
