Norway Spruce (Picea abies) tree seedlings are fast-growing, symmetrical, spire-shaped evergreens, reaching heights of 150'. Reaches 6' in 6-7 years. Picea abies literally means spruce fir. This tree forms a broad, dense, dark green pyramid with distinctive upward-lifting branches and drooping side branches of slender, dark green needles. The bark is reddish-brown or gray with broad, flat, scaly plates. These trees should be planted a distance from the house! Desirable as ornamentals, windbreaks, and Christmas tree plantings. You can pay a lot of money for an "instant tree" or plant a few of these fast growers. They are quite beautiful, and make a wonderful privacy screen, as well as helping to block neighborhood noise from your yard. Thrives in full sun, but is also somewhat shade tolerant. Enjoys well-drained soils, such as sandy plains. Hardy for Zones 2-7. Nursery grown: Pennsylvania license No. 319.
